Contemporary folk

Contemporary folk nights run upstairs at Oakes Barn, St Andrews Street South, Bury St Edmunds IP33 3PH, on the first Wednesday of the month. The music start at 8.00 pm and continues till 10.30 pm with a mid-evening break.

On these evenings, we provide an MC but no PA – performances are unplugged. We usually ask artists to perform a total of three or four songs, tunes or items. There may be some flexibility at the discretion of the MC, but we will usually ask you to give two of your pieces in each half of the evening.

There may be opportunities for performers from the floor to provide a song or two – and we may invite booked-in performers to play more pieces if there is time, so have an extra tune or two ready.

General Notes

The running order is announced at the start of all Bury Folk Collective evenings. We therefore ask all performers to arrive in good time (you might be asked to play first!) and to be tuned and ready to go by the stated start time. Performers at our events do not pay an entrance fee.

Bury Folk Collective encourages a ‘listening audience’ – we ask that all mobile phones are switched off so you can be assured of quiet during your spots. As a courtesy to other contributors, we ask you to join the ‘listening audience’ when you are not playing and to give other musicians your attention for the full evening. Our events are as much about listening to one another as they are about performance.

We do encourage audience participation when it is appropriate – and the Bury Folk Collective audience can also be a fine ‘singing audience’. If you have songs that people can join in with and you would welcome some participation, please let people know at the start of the piece.
